Rota

Your department's call roster, on your phone. Someone uploads the roster once, and everyone in the department opens it.

Works without signal Light on data Free, no ads, no analytics

Every month the call roster goes up on a notice board, gets photographed, and disappears into a WhatsApp group where nobody can find it three weeks later. Rota gives it one place.

Rota is a shared notice board for hospital call rosters. Someone in the department uploads the monthly on-call roster once, as a photo of the board, the PDF from the secretary or the spreadsheet itself, and everyone at the hospital can open it on their phone.

It is for doctors, interns, registrars, nurses and anyone else who needs to know who is on call. It costs nothing, and there are no ads and no in-app purchases.

  1. Pick your hospital

Eighty South African hospitals are listed. If yours is missing, add it and you become its first admin.

  2. Find your department

Each one shows its newest three months, with the latest at the top.

  3. Open the roster

Photos and PDFs open in Rota. Word and Excel files open in the app you already have, or go straight to WhatsApp with Share.

  4. Upload the next one

A photo of the board, the PDF from the secretary, or the spreadsheet itself, up to 2 MB. You can also send it from the share sheet in Mail, Files or WhatsApp, or email it to Rota. Uploading the same month again replaces the old file.

Built for hospital life.

Works without signal

A roster you have opened stays on your phone and opens offline. Basements and lift lobbies included.

Light on data

The list refreshes only when something has changed, and a roster is capped at 2 MB, so downloads stay quick on hospital signal.

Anyone can upload

Any verified colleague can put up the next roster, so nobody waits for the one person who usually posts it.

Every change is signed

Uploads and deletions are logged with the uploader's name, so a mistake can be traced and put right.

Old rosters clear themselves

A roster is deleted 125 days after upload, file and all, and a daily roster after 21 days. Nothing that names colleagues sits online for years.

Three months, no clutter

A department keeps this month, next month and last month. When a fourth goes up, the oldest retires on its own.

Every change has a name on it.

Any verified user can add a hospital, and becomes its admin. Admins see the history of changes, restore a roster deleted by mistake, block a user who is uploading nonsense, or lock the department's rosters while they sort things out.

Every upload, replacement, deletion and restoration is recorded with the account that made it, and anyone can report a roster, from the roster itself or from Settings. To become an admin of a hospital that already exists, ask from inside the app. Requests come to us.

No patient data. No ads. No analytics.

Rota is a notice board, and it holds what a notice board holds: call rosters, and the names of the colleagues on them. There is no patient record in the app and nowhere to create one. It contains no advertising and no analytics software, and it does not collect your location or your contacts. Rosters and the hospital lists are stored on Google Cloud in Johannesburg, and every roster is deleted automatically when it expires.

What it does store is your account, the rosters you upload, and a history of who changed what. You sign in with your email address and a password, a one-time code confirms the address is yours, and you can delete your account from Settings whenever you like. A roster is not private to one department: any signed-in, verified Rota user can open it and see who uploaded it, so never upload patient information, personal phone numbers, or anything the department would not pin up in the corridor.

Rota is not an official source of duty information. It shows what your colleagues upload, and Krikdex does not check it. Duty arrangements are between you, your colleagues and your employer, so when it matters, confirm with your department.

Frequently asked questions

Nothing. There are no ads and no in-app purchases.

You sign in with your email address and a password. The first time, Rota emails you a one-time code to prove the address is yours: a verified address is what makes every upload traceable to a real person. A code is also how you reset a forgotten password.

Yes. Tap the hospital name at the top of the Rosters tab, search, and if it is missing choose Add a hospital. You become its first admin.

Photos (JPEG or PNG), PDF, Word (.doc, .docx) and Excel (.xls, .xlsx), up to 2 MB. Photos from the camera are resized to fit.

A roster is one page. Two megabytes keeps downloads quick on hospital signal, and keeps the app light on data for everyone.

Yes. Send it to rota.roster@gmail.com with the hospital, the department and the month in the subject, for example “Tygerberg urology roster October 2026”. Rota files it under your name and emails you a receipt. If something is missing it asks, and one word back is enough. If you sent the wrong roster, reply UNDO to the receipt.

The first time you write from an address that has no account, Rota asks first, and nothing is published until you reply YES. Best of all, add the address to the email your department already sends its roster to, and it is filed every month without anyone opening the app.

Any signed-in, verified Rota user. Rota is a notice board, not a private channel: do not upload anything the department would not pin up in the corridor, and never patient information or personal phone numbers.

A call roster is only useful for the month it covers and a little after, and a daily roster goes after 21 days. Deleting it automatically keeps the app current, and means old rosters, which name colleagues, do not sit online for years.

Upload the right one for the same department and month, and it replaces the wrong one. Or open the roster, tap Details, then Delete.

Fona is the switchboard directory: extensions and numbers. Rota is the call roster. They share the same hospital list and are made by the same people.

Settings, then Delete my account. Your profile, admin roles, requests and verification records go at once. Rosters you uploaded stay until they expire, but are no longer linked to your name.
